Abstract
It has been known that different annexins are expressed in various cell types in mammalian nervous system. Furthermore, annexin 1 has been demonstrated to have anti-inflammatory effect in experimental arthritis. So, the patterns of annexin 1 expression in the spinal cord may change during the development of arthritis. To clarify the relationship of spinal annexin 1 expression with response to injury and the progressing of arthritis, we compared the change of annexin 1 expression in the spinal cord at different time points after carrageenan injected into knee joint using immunohistochemistry. Our results showed that annexin 1 expression was significantly increased at the ipsilateral side to carrageenan injection at 8 h and on 1 and 3 days after carrageenan injection, and peaked on 1 day. The data in the present study suggest that annexin 1 in the spinal cord may be involved in neuronal and/or glial responses to acute arthritis and may contribute to the endogenous protection from various injury.
